A lake for every taste

6.8 kilometres long. 1.2 kilometres wide. 133 metres deep. Drinking-water quality – yes, you read that right.

Diving? The underwater world here has a lot to offer.

Insider tips for lake lovers: early mornings, the whole lake is yours. The water lies still, the mountain peaks reflected perfectly. In the evening, the surface turns to liquid gold as the sun sinks behind the mountains. You walk down the meadow path in your bathrobe straight to the lake. No detours, just pure water bliss.

In winter

And then comes winter. With an area of more than 9km² and a depth of up to 133 metres, Lake Achensee is usually too vast and too stubborn to freeze over. But sometimes, in very cold winters, it does – and that’s an event the calm Achensee locals love to discuss passionately.

Usually, this happens instead: the shallow shoreline freezes into perfect natural ice rinks, and curling becomes a local sport. But the deep part of the lake stays turquoise blue, lying mysteriously between snow-covered banks.

Emil has learnt: “Lake Achensee is like the Tyroleans – stubborn. Other lakes give up and freeze, but it keeps fighting. Respect.”

The winter miracle:
when it does freeze completely, Lake Achensee transforms into a vast natural ice rink framed by the Karwendel massif. Even the locals come to marvel. And the scenery around the lake is wonderful all year round anyway.
